First of all a massive congratulations and welcome, to all you new students that have been accepted into the College for this coming year! All Of us at MSU would like to take this opportunity to personally wish you all the best of luck throughout your stay here, I know you all will do yourselves proud and at the same time have an amazing experience!! So feel free at anytime to pop up to see us, have a chat, draw us a picture or sing us a song! We are situated up in the back of the SU Bar! The more you familiarise yourself with your new found surroundings, you will soon learn why Marjon is so close to so many of our hearts! The overwhelming friendly atmosphere it creates on a day to day basis. It is not wrong when Ithey say; Guess what, that’s you. As new students to a university you are affectionately known as Freshers!
Fresher’s week, which is actually a fortnight, is entertainment that has been specially formulated to help you mix and get to know your fellow students. Most of the nights take place on campus in our own safe environment, for all the off campus nights we will be supplying buses and coaches to transport you to all the fun. Each night has a small door charge and this is to cover the cost of entertainment and staff, however we strongly recommend that you buy a fresher's pass that gets you into everything and is the only way to guarantee a place on the buses and saves you over £10.00. The nearest ATM machine is situated on campus opposite the Marjon shop. Other machines are situated at Derriford hospital (5mins walk) or at Crownhill where there is also Chinese, pizza, and fish and chip joints as well as a co-op and a chemist. The bus stop is situated on site, at the back of the sports hall by the top car park (where you first drive into the College, by the big ‘College of St Mark and St John sign).
The nearest doctors is a short walk away from College (about 15mins), heading up towards Tesco. The address is: Roborough Surgery, 1 Eastcote Close, Southway, Plymouth, PL6 6PH. Other surgeries can be found in Estover (near Asda), Crownhill and in Mutley, where the majority of students live in their later years and Uni.
A dentist can also be found in Crownhill (maybe you could pop in when you drop in for a Chinese sometime?!). Crownhill Dental Practice: 01752 771656 Meavy Way Dental Clinic (Crownhill): 01752 773412 For all NHS users there is a emergency dentist situated not far from the city centre, called the ‘Seven Trees Clinic’ Bearing street (01752 314151).
The closest opticians is once again in Crownhill, its called Noaks and Habermehl (01752 772116), although there are many Opticians in Mutley and the town centre, so there is no shortage of choice. The nearest Pharmacies can be found either at Tesco, Southway shopping centre (down the hill from Roborough doctors surgery) or Crownhill. However, if it’s nothing too serious, the College shop have a wide range of remedies for cold, flu and other bits and bobs! Never fear, Derriford hospital is here! And what’s even better its only about a minute away, next door to the College and it’s all a downhill walk! Just a shame you have to walk all the way back up again! Just walk down the hill from the College Bus stop! We have great posting facilities right here on campus at the Porters Lodge and in the book shop. However, there is also a Post Office situated at Crownhill or at Southway shopping centre. Whether your going’ large or just playing it cool, the obvious and best venue around is undoubtedly the SUB! We also have a large range of the above items at great prices situated at the SU shop. Alternatively Tesco and Asda are just down the road! I would suggest Mutley Plain being a good choice for you new students, with its long strip of bars especially Café Sol and the Mannamead Wetherspoons. North Hill is also a good shout, especially the likes of Fuel, Cuba and Ride. And of course in the city with a choice of club for all tastes such as Walkabout, C103 and Varsity! Cash Point
